Information on OET Aroma Therapy

In ancient cultures, such as the ancient Egyptians or Mesopotamia, fragrances or plant parts were used to maintain health for body, mind and soul. These were probably the beginnings of modern aromatherapy. The Roman historian Pliny the Elder reports, for example, on the use of mint leaves to clean sick rooms.

In July 1910 René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist for cosmetics and perfumery, had an accident in his laboratory which made him the father of aromatherapy. In his laboratory, there was an explosion that burned his hands and scalp. He treated his burns with lavender oil, whereupon they healed surprisingly quickly and completely without scarring.
